This week, as we continue our exploration of the intriguing question, “Can it be waffled?”, we’ve encountered a mix of culinary triumphs and disappointments. Among our experiments, we faced several failures, a few mediocre results that were still edible, and one standout success.
First up on the failure list were frozen pierogi. While they retained their original flavor, they ended up being drier and tougher than expected. Similarly disappointing were White Castle cheeseburgers; waffling intensified the meat’s flavor in an unappealing way for these beloved sliders.
Now for our highlight: falafel—let’s call it “wafalafel.”
Interestingly enough, falafel turned out to be both our greatest achievement and a notable setback. The outcome really hinges on how you approach the waffling process.
Many enthusiasts have successfully waffled raw falafel mix; however, our aim with this series has always been to keep things straightforward—minimizing preparation time while using ingredients that can be quickly assembled or purchased.
With that in mind, we decided to waffle pre-cooked falafel balls from Taïm—the premier falafel spot in town.
Unfortunately, this attempt did not meet our essential criteria: “Does this create a bite that’s better or at least equally enjoyable?” Unless you enjoy dry remnants of what was once deliciously moist falafel over fresh versions, this method fell short.
Then inspiration struck: what if we tried waffling an entire falafel sandwich?
Now we’re onto something exciting!
The pita bread acts as a protective layer against drying out or burning the falafels while crisping into delightful wedges that are easy to hold. Anyone who has attempted to eat a traditional falafel sandwich while dressed up knows how messy it can get—those soft spherical pieces tend to squish out and create quite the mess! If there were an award for “most impractical shape for sandwiches,” round falafels would surely take top honors.
However, when you press that same sandwich into a waffle iron? You transform it into an elegant snack fit for any occasion!
Especially when paired with tahini sauce and Taïm’s fantastic hot sauce!
To create your own wafalafel masterpiece at home: brush your assembled falafel sandwich with olive oil before placing it in a preheated waffle iron. Cook until golden brown and crispy; serve alongside pickles and your favorite condiments—and don’t forget those stylish boots!
